Xbox has announced significant steps to improve the repairability and sustainability of its consoles. Players will soon have the option to purchase official replacement parts for Xbox Series X/S systems directly from the Microsoft Store and iFixit. This initiative allows owners to perform out-of-warranty repairs on their consoles at home. Previously, Microsoft only sold replacement parts for Xbox controllers. Now, parts for the Series S and both the disc and all-digital editions of the Series X are available, accompanied by step-by-step repair guides. Additionally, iFixit offers an Xbox toolkit tailored to these repairs.

From January 20, uBreakiFix by Asurion will become the first Xbox Authorized Service Provider. With nearly 700 participating locations across the United States, this expansion makes authorized Xbox console repairs more accessible than ever. Previously, in-person repairs were limited to Microsoft Store locations. Gamers now have more convenient options for repairs without voiding their warranties.

These initiatives represent progress in the right-to-repair movement, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of discarded electronics. “By expanding the number of ways players can get support and repair for their Xbox consoles, we also help extend the longevity of Xbox devices, reduce waste, promote re-use, and ultimately reduce our environmental impact,” stated Trista Patterson, director of gaming sustainability at Xbox, in a recent Xbox Wire post.

Xbox is also advancing other sustainability goals. The company has eliminated single-use plastics in the packaging of Xbox Series X/S systems, transitioning to entirely paper- and fiber-based materials. Furthermore, recent improvements to how the Xbox Series S manages video content have reduced power consumption by an average of 10 percent during media app usage.

Microsoft’s game studios are also contributing to these efforts. By leveraging the Xbox Sustainability Toolkit, they are designing games with greater energy efficiency in mind. Collectively, these initiatives reinforce Microsoft’s commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, offering players eco-friendly solutions and empowering them to extend the lifespan of their gaming devices.
